In the early to mid-1800s, the hills surrounding Lake Hughes and Elizabeth Lake were home to a booming population of California grizzly bears (Ursus arctos californicus). The lakes served as key watering holes, making it nearly impossible for local ranchers to successfully raise livestock. Due to hunting, poisoning, and increasing habitat pressure, grizzlies were ultimately driven to extinction in California, with the last confirmed sighting recorded in 1924.
The “chaparral grizzly” later became the central symbol on the California state flag, representing strength and independence during the Bear Flag Revolt. Today, the only bears commonly seen in the region are smaller, more reclusive American black bears, still inhabiting the surrounding mountains. This mug was designed to honor the history of bears in California, and to pay homage to the chaparral grizzly.
